Condition
Pigmentation & Sun Damage
Overview
Your skin contains a pigment called melanin, which determines the colour of your skin, hair, and eyes.
Melanin production is triggered by various factors, including exposure to UV rays, hormonal changes, and trauma to the skin. These factors stimulate melanocyte cells—the cells responsible for producing melanin.
When melanocyte cells become overactive or damaged, melanin production can become uneven. This results in visible skin changes such as freckles, brown spots, and patches of hyperpigmentation.
Although freckles and age spots are not harmful, they are clear indicators of sun damage and can contribute to premature ageing of the skin.
Affects of Pigmentation & Sun Damage
Alternatively, when melanocyte cells are damaged, they may stop producing melanin altogether, resulting in hypo pigmentation—light patches of skin where pigment is lost. This condition is generally difficult to treat, and in most cases, requires medical intervention. As such, we are unable to treat hypopigmentation within our clinic.
In deeper skin tones, pigmentation concerns like melasma or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) often result from hormonal changes, acne, or skin injuries. For best results, we recommend our Comprehensive facial VISIA skin analysis consultation utilising our VISIA skin scanner to create a personalised treatment plan.
